JOHANNESBURG - A major global summit is heading to Joburg, and it's a first for the African continent.
Global Citizen Now, the world's largest movement dedicated to ending extreme poverty, will bring world leaders, investors, and activists together at the Sandton Convention Centre.
It comes just hours before the G20 meets on SA soil for the very first time.
The event will feature President Cyril Ramaphosa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and other high-profile voices.
It's focused on unlocking Africa's clean-energy future and closing the gap for the 600 million people still without electricity.
Hugh Evans, the Co-Founder and CEO of Global Citizen, said this summit is focused on action.
"We want people to leave with concrete outcomes," he said.
"We've asked leaders to come with time-bound, targeted commitments focused on scaling up renewable energy."
He said they've set a goal of providing 10 million households with access to clean energy by 2030.
"We're trying to get governments to provide the private sector with the support they need to invest in renewable energy."
Nomzamo Mbatha, the Global Citizen Ambassador, said the summit is taking place at a pivotal time.
"I think the ordinary South African is never to think that the high-level conversations do not involve them," she said.
"Policies are important. We must read what kind of commitments are being made and how they affect your everyday life."
Mbatha said that without the language of that, South Africans will miss the message.
"It is our responsibility as the young people who have been afforded the opportunities to be in these kinds of rooms, who still have access to the everyday South African who may not have access to those rooms, to bridge that gap."
