CAPE TOWN - Agriculture Minister, John Steenhuisen, says it's all systems go for the foot-and-mouth disease vaccine rollout.
More than one million vaccines are expected by next week.
The Western Cape government is rolling out a mass foot-and-mouth disease vaccination drive in Fisantekraal, outside Cape Town, to protect its R13.5 billion livestock industry.
The vaccinations form part of the province’s 21-point action plan to combat the national outbreak.
Veterinarians and animal health officials from the provincial Agriculture Department are inoculating 450 cattle.
Meanwhile, Zambia has suspended all imports of South African livestock amid the foot and mouth disease outbreak.
The ban extends to livestock feeds, trophies, skins, hides and hooves.
The Zambian government has also revoked all permits to transport animals from South Africa into that country.
During his State of The Nation Address on Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared the outbreak a national disaster.
