GP Health Dept granted interdict against striking union members

The Gauteng health department has been granted an interdict preventing striking union members from obstructing health services.

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Health has been granted an interdict preventing striking union members from obstructing health services.

The order bars any threat, intimidation or violence against hospital workers, as well as from damaging property or blocking entrances.

On Tuesday, participants in the public service protest action caused disruptions at the Chris Hani Baragwanath and Sebokeng Hospitals.

Demonstrators blocked administrative staff from entering the premises.

This led to the cancellation of all elective surgeries and only one operational emergency theatre, with both hospitals operating with minimal staff.

The SAPS has also been ordered to assist with enforcing the interdict.
