Guatemala City - Guatemala’ s president Bernardo Arevalo has declared a 30-day state of siege after gang violence killed seven police officers and wounded dozens more.
Security forces stormed three prisons to free 46 guards held hostage by the Barrio 18 gang.
When authorities recaptured the gang's leader, Barrio 18 launched coordinated attacks across Guatemala City.
Authorities say the gang sought prison privileges and retaliated when denied.
The siege expands military and police powers and suspends some civil liberties.
