Half of childhood cancer cases in SA go undiagnosed

JOHANNESBURG - September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the Cancer Association of South Africa, between 800 and a thousand children are diagnosed with cancer every year.

However, it's estimated that half of the children with cancer in South Africa are never diagnosed.

Paediatric oncologists say this is because its symptoms mimic conditions including TB, enlarged lymph nodes, or HIV.

Professor Mariana Kruger from Stellenbosch University's Paediatrics and Child Health Department discussed this with eNCA.
