JOHANNESBURG - The Hawks have made significant strides in arresting individuals involved in high-profile cases.
Hawks head Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya says 656 people have been arrested thus far.
Lebeya released the fourth quarterly results on Thursday.
Of those arrested, 450 are South Africans, whereas 157 are foreign nationals were also arrested.
These arrests targeted people involved in money laundering, cash-in-transit robberies, illegal mining and drug trafficking.
The statistics come amid lingering questions as to whether the investigative directorate is on the right track in its fight against crime.
Lebeya also noted with concern that criminals target police officials.
He says that during the period under review, at least 22 police officials were killed.
Of those murdered, 16 were off duty while six were on duty.
Gauteng leads with the highest number of police murders, reaching 50 percent.
