JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Health Department has won a high court appeal in the Cancer Alliance case.
The group took Gauteng Health to court for for failing to provide life-saving cancer treatment on time.
In March, the court found in favour of the Cancer Alliance.
It ordered the department to urgently clear the treatment backlog and provide detailed reports on cancer services.
The department appealed and the latest ruling overturns the March order.
The court also dismissed claims that executing the order would prevent irreparable harm to cancer patients.
It noted that the Cancer Alliance does not bear responsibility for patient admissions, diagnoses or treatment.
The Department says it remains committed to reducing waiting lists.
It says it's working to improve oncology services at Charlotte Maxeke and Steve Biko Hospitals.
