Hill-Lewis says there'll be harsh consequences for those who break the law

CAPE TOWN - Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says taxi owners and members of the Santaco trade union will be held in contempt of court if they continue wreaking havoc in Cape Town.

The city has secured a court interdict barring violence during the protest that's entered it's seventh day.

But there's no end in sight as negotiations have once again stalled.

Hill-Lewis said, "obviously when people don't respect the rule of law, it could be considered a symbolic victory but I think it's an important symbolic message that sends a clear message to taxi thugs and gangsters that if they do break the terms of that court order they will also be held in contempt."

"The key victory or progress that has already been delivered this morning is that we've had a perfectly peaceful morning, this morning in Cape Town."

"Our commuters who are using the Buses can do so peacefully and safely."

Hill-Lewis said a very strong law enforcement presence on the N2 is maintaining peace.
