JOHANNESBURG - The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are advocating for expanded public services and municipal employment in the City of Johannesburg.
But with the City of Gold already strained financially, the question is how will the EFF funds its plans without imposing unaffordable increases on rate payers?
EFF Mayoral candidate Tlaleng Mofokeng says looking into the city's entities.
According to Mofokeng, Johannesburg’s entities, which are responsible for day-to-day service delivery, “are more privatised than actually designed to bring the obligations of the municipality to life."
“What the EFF will do is stop the very high consultancy fees that the city is currently paying of billions a year and stop multiple, bloated executive boards as well as the C-suites that we are currently paying for in all of these entities."
The EFF is also proposing people's assemblies in each ward to assist with accountability.
“Currently, if a tender is out in the city of Johannesburg there isn't a technical team that can reassure citizens that that infrastructure development or that project is actually going to yield the desired outcome.”
On municipal employment Mofokeng said it is important for local communities to benefit directly from municipal projects through existing programmes such as the Expanded Public Works Programme.
“The key is that people must be insourced and not be subject to labour brokering that takes away about 20% of their salaries.”
This forms part of EFF’s broader plan to improve service delivery while tackling poverty and financial waste in Joburg.
