IEC cracking down on political parties with unpaid debts

JOHANNESBURG - The Electoral Commission is cracking down hard on political parties with unpaid debts. 

More than 400 parties collectively owe the IEC a staggering R17-million for violating the Political Party Funding Act.

The Commission warns that these unpaid funds threaten both the smooth running of elections and crucial voter education.

"We are talking about represented and unrepresented political parties," said the IEC's George Mahlangu.
