JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has challenged South Africans to protect the Constitution and strengthen democracy through voting.
The commission said leadership at the municipal level must be continuously renewed through the electoral process.
The IEC has launched its national campaign ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

During the launch, IEC chairperson Glen Mashinini said citizens have collective and individual responsibilities to contribute to the country's constitutional project and its posterity.
"The launch reminds us that the constitutional covenant between our people of South Africa and those who will represent them in the local municipality is one that has to be continuously renewed," he said.
