Illegal Mining | Lesotho govt talks tough on zama zamas in SA

JOHANNESBURG - The Government of Lesotho says it will be meeting with the South African government to discuss bilateral trade issues and challenges affecting the economies of both countries such as illegal mining.

The foreign ministry of Lesotho says it is aware of the issue of illegal miners operating in South Africa - saying there are ways to address the issue.

"As you know Lesotho and South Africa are not only neighbours but they enjoy cordial and friendly relations within a framework that is very clear and structured and that is the Bi-National Commission of Cooperation which we are going to officially launch," said Lesotho Ministry of Foreign Affairs Teboho Mohapi.

"So it is within that context that we address our issues as the two neighbouring countries so I think whatever the minister said is within the context of the BNC and will be discussed at the proper forum."

Last month, 31 bodies believed to be Lesotho nationals were found at an abandoned mine shaft in Welkom in the Free State.

The bodies were wrapped in white sacks and police have opened an inquest into the matter.
