Illegal mining | Suspected kingpins in court

JOHANNESBURG - Six alleged illegal mining kingpins will appear in court on Thursday.

They were arrested last year and face charges including contravening the Precious Metals Act.

At the time of the arrest, the Asset Forfeiture Unit seized 51 vehicles and seven properties.

The National Prosecuting Authority is opposing bail.

It says more suspects may be added to the case.

"The matter will be transferred to the high court for the trial," said NPA Regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

 

"The investigation is ongoing and if we find other properties will will apply for the preservation order of those properties."
