IMF says indebted governments must tighten their belts

JOHANNESBURG - The International Monetary Fund has called on governments to reign in their borrowing.

It comes amid growing debt issues around the world due to higher interest rates.

IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva was speaking before IMF and World Bank annual meetings to be held in Bangkok next week.

She said that debt levels are the highest they've been since the second world war and governments need to make tough political choices.

Yields on government bonds in the US - effectively the interest rate on the debt - have jumped in recent weeks.

It sparked concern that governments will have to give investors bigger paybacks to loan money.

Fears around France's debt position has dropped the Euro to a 17-month low in recent days.
