'The impeachment process will be enhanced as soon as he is out of office' - Zungula

JOHANNESBURG - The African Transformation Movement has moved to intensify pressure on President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The party filed a motion of no confidence following the Constitutional Court’s ruling on Parliament’s handling of the Phala Phala report.

They said removing him from office would allow witnesses from institutions like SARS and the Reserve Bank to testify more freely.

"Once you have a motion of no confidence and the president is out of office, in fact, that is the best way to ensure that the impeachment process goes through without any untoward influence over the witnesses.

"Whether people like it or not, there's a court order from the Constitutional Court that says parliament must have an impeachment process.

"Now, in that impeachment process, there's going to be witnesses coming from SARS, the Reserve Bank, and all of these other public institutions.

"Now, if they are going to testify against a sitting president, it might influence how they testify because it is very difficult to speak out against a sitting president. We've seen it with these reports on  Phala Phala, by the Public Protector, the Reserve Bank."

Zungula said people have found it very difficult to speak out against Ramaphosa because he is in office.

"We do want to alert people. It is not either or. The impeachment process will not stop simply because he's no longer in office. In fact, the impeachment process will be enhanced as soon as he is out of office."
