JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng is working to improve the registration, funding and quality of early childhood development centres across the province.
Some centres operate in informal settlements where safety requirements complicate registration and access to government support.
Gauteng education spokesperson Onwabile Lubhelwana said government is placing resources at its disposal to ensure that it is supported sufficiently.
"At the open day yesterday, we're dealing with NGOs and ECD center teachers who had come to learn more and also others who had come to know how best can they comply. As you would know, some would be in informal settlements.
"Some of the areas are not yet zoned as township or as areas where humans can reside. But you do find an ECD center working informally at at a shack, for example. But government is trying to ensure that there is support there and it is safe. And there are no incidents which display that the sector is reckless."
