JOHANNESBURG - As South Africa marks Heritage Day, historian Pitika Ntuli said schools should introduce heritage studies into the curriculum.
He also said community elders should have space to pass their knowledge and wisdom to children in their communities.
"I would advise the government that the issue of heritage studies to be introduced in schools and introduced in a manner that it is going to be taught not only by the regular teachers, but the curriculum should include the older members of the communities who would be invited to carry this forward.
"We don't have our own education system. We are a photocopy of the Oxbridge thing. We don't have our own culture. That is where one advises the government that we need to introduce the issues of heritage. Heritage in art, heritage in history, heritage in religion, heritage in every facet of it as it actually comes to us and as we receive it.
