JOHANNESBURG - The Joburg Crisis Alliance warns that Johannesburg cannot afford another five years of poor service delivery and crumbling infrastructure.
The alliance calls for stronger civic structures and greater community participation to hold the incoming city council accountable.
JCA co-convener Neeshan Balton said urgent action is needed to keep the city from sliding deeper into crisis.
The alliance met in Parkview earlier.
"It needs to now move beyond being a crisis alliance to something more formal to do the work that has been outlined here. Because the JCA itself must become a democratic organisation that must bring together people, that must build these civic structures.
"And when we build them, we need to make sure that all the education and advocacy work that we've spoken about here takes place across the length and breadth of the city.
"Because on the 4th, a new government comes into place in Johannesburg. They will be there for five years until 2031. Now, keep that in mind. 2031, we are going to be having these summits, and we will gather here in 2031. And very little would have changed besides having to pay more for very little. I don't think we can afford that. I don't think we can afford for this city to collapse."
