Joburg proposes steep water levy jump

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg has proposed a steep hike in the levy charged to households to receive water.

The water demand management levy is set to jump by 66% from July.

Currently, users with conventional meters or prepaid ones are paying R65 as a base charge to connect to the water infrastructure.

That’s a fixed fee that does not consider a household’s consumption.

It is set to jump at the same time that consumption charges climb by 12.5% in July.

Both charges will attract additional VAT.

The Water Demand Management Levy was introduced in the 2018 financial year and has increased by nearly 200 percent in the last two years.

Ferial Adam from the civil society group Watercan says all the cities' charges should be justified.
