Lamola condemns vigilante actions targeting foreign nationals

JOHANNESBURG - International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola has condemned groups that target foreign nationals and take the law into their own hands.

Lamola described their actions as a witch hunt that threatens constitutional values.

His remarks come amid growing tensions over the immigration issue in South Africa.

Government said it's strengthening its immigration enforcement capacity.

It admits there have been problems in implementing existing laws.

It comes as frustration grows over porous borders and illegal immigration.

"As government, we acknowledge that there is a challenge with regard to the issues related to the implementation of immigration law. And it is for that reason that the BMA was formed and funded and supported," Lamola said.

"We accept that the money might not be enough, but it is there now, and it is supported.

"The fact that now there are groups that are moving from house to house and identifying foreign nationals is a witch hunt. And that cannot be allowed in any constitutional democracy,"
