JOHANNESBURG - Less than 1% of inmates escaped from South African prisons in the last financial year.
This was announced by Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola.
He delivered his budget vote on Thursday.
Following the much-publicised Thabo Bester escape, the department terminated its contract with Bloemfontein Correctional Services and private security company G4S.
Lamola says even one escape is one too many.
