Land invasions | Cape Town's housing headache

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has taken a hardline against illegal land invasions and have obtained several court interdicts to prevent them.

The Silvertown housing development in Khayelitsha was targeted for occupation on Monday by victims of Sunday's shack fire who live nearby, but are not beneficiaries.

Community leaders in Khayelitsha say while they do not support illegal invasions, they can sympathise.

They put the blame squarely on the City of Cape Town for what almost happened at the Silvertown house development site.

The provincial government says plans are underway to resume the project.
It's set to benefit
 close to 700 families.

In Mitchells Plain, residents took to the streets protesting against the illegal occupation of sports fields.

The City of Cape Town says while it understands the housing backlog, many of these illegal occupations are delaying progress to reduce the housing crisis.
