Land Restitution | East London residents vow to fight for 'their' land

EAST LONDON - Land restitution is still a contentious issue in South Africa.

Often, those who were dispossessed from their land in the wake of Apartheid's Group Areas Act die without being given what belongs to them or, if they are lucky, are forced to wait for decades for it.

But, in the Eastern Cape, things have taken a different twist. Officials are threatening to evict land occupants from a place they've called home since the 1950s.

Community leaders are putting the blame squarely on government saying the intention to remove them from this piece of land is detrimental to the lives of people who have lived and buried their loved ones here.

This past week, residents clashed with private security and while the matter is expected to be heard in court soon, the community has promised that they won't end up destitute.
