Lifeguards praised for New Year's action

CAPE TOWN - Lifesaving South Africa has praised lifeguards for their quick action on a hectic New Year’s Day.

Despite numerous rescues, the organisation reports several drownings.

A man drowned at Strand Beach in Cape Town, with rescues also at Umhlanga Main and Strandfontein.

Fatalities were reported at iSimangaliso Wetland and Pennington beaches, where searches continue.

Another drowning occurred this morning at Thompson’s Bay in Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal.

Lifesaving South Africa extended condolences to families and urged the public to swim only where lifeguards are on duty.
