Madlanga Commission | Doctors may be subpoenaed if witnesses miss hearings

PRETORIA - The Madlanga Commission plans to take a tougher stance on witnesses who fail to appear.

On Wednesday, the commission adjourned for the day after a Crime Intelligence witness failed to show up, citing illness.

Commissioners say they may subpoena doctors to prove their patients are indeed ill.

Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels expressed concern over this matter saying the commission runs a risk of witnessing a recuring theme.

"The commission has important business. These witnesses, persons of interest to the commission are meant to be testifying and we can't have a situation where we keep getting medical certificates like this," Michaels said.

The commission is scheduled to reconvene on Thursday.

Suspended Ekurhuleni HR Head Linda Gxasheka is set to take the stand.

She's accused of protecting the EMPD's Julius Mkhwanazi. Gxasheka is set to take the stand until Friday.
