Madlanga Commission welcomes deadline extension of it's term

PRETORIA- Madlanga Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said the commission has welcomed the extension of its deadline by the President.

The Commission will now submit its final findings and recommendations by the end of August.

Michaels said the commission has a very long list of witnesses to get through.

"In phase one, of course, and again, as a reminder for viewers and listeners, phase one heard all the allegations by Lieutenant General Mukwanazi and 28 other witnesses who followed tabling and placing under oath the allegations of wrongdoing,"

He said in Phase one there were a lot of individuals implicated.

Phase two saw implicated individuals coming to account, answer to allegations and tell their side of the story as well as to assist the Commission in the inquiry.

"There is a lot we need to get through, and we still need to through to Phase 3 where Lieutenant General Mukwanazi and others have to come to the Commission.

"In addition to that the Commission must also table an interim report which is time consuming and then the final report," Michaels said.

The commission is currently on day 74 of its proceedings, with more than 40 witnesses having already testified.

Michaels said the Commiossion is now working around the new deadline and carefully planning its programme for the coming months.
