CAPE TOWN - Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga would like fair access to the legal system regardless of whether one is rich or poor.
Madlanga was delivering the annual Rabinowitz Lecture to the law faculty of the University of Cape Town.
The Madlanga Commission chair zoomed into how inequality has resulted in the formation of a barrier to court access for the disadvantaged.
"More than half of litigating South Africans had to represent themselves in court during 2025. This without legal knowledge and familiarity with court process. However, there may still not equality of arms because their financial limitations may only allow affordability of a certain lawyer with skills."
