The Angel Project, a non-profit animal welfare group, intervened after police notified them and rescued Lion.
Sadly, a veterinarian determined that Lion had to be euthanised to end his suffering.
The video shows the man drinking a beer while cruelly letting the dog struggle for his life.
The accused will return to Vredendal Magistrate's Court on 16 September for sentencing.
