JOHANNESBURG - Former Police Minister Bheki Cele says he could not personally drive investigations into apartheid-era crimes while serving as National Police Commissioner.
He was appearing before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Cases Inquiry on Tuesday.
This week, the inquiry probing whether political interference prevented TRC-related cases from being properly investigated focused on the role of the police and whether they abetted delays in TRC cases.

During his testimony, Cele insisted that the responsibility was with a specialised unit within the Hawks tasked with investigating crimes against the state.
He insisted that there was little he could do about apartheid-era crimes while serving as national police commissioner.
Also, during his testimony, Cele said he still wants answers about comrades who were killed or disappeared during apartheid.
