Mapisa-Nqakula breaks down in court

PRETORIA -  Former National Assembly speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula broke down in the witness box.

She appeared in the High Court in Pretoria, facing fraud and corruption charges on Monday.

Mapisa-Nqakula faces 12 counts of corruption and one of money laundering, for allegedly receiving kickbacks from a defence contractor when she was the defence minister.

Mapisa-Nqakula was visibly emotional in the accused box before walking out in tears.

Her lawyer, advocate Graham Kerr-Phillips, confirms they received the docket last week and have requested an adjournment to November.

The defence also wants to make representations to the National Director of Public Prosecutions,
to see if there is a case against the former speaker.
