Matlala's affidavit can not be used until deal is finalised - NPA

JOHANNESBURG - The NPA's spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, says they're unable to rely on Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala’s statement implicating high-ranking officers.

This is until a deal is concluded.

The Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has rejected the alleged criminal kingpin's proposed sentence in a plea agreement, tied to a widening SAPS tender corruption case.

Matlala, who has pleaded guilty to fraud, corruption and money laundering, is expected to become a state witness in exchange for a reduced sentence of eight years or less.

But prosecutors say negotiations are still ongoing.

"We are hopeful that the matter will be finalized as soon as possible," he said.

The matter will be back in court on 13 July.
