Meyiwa Wrap | Alibi's late disclosure raises questions

JOHANNESBURG - The alleged lookout in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial insists he was at home in KwaZulu-Natal when the soccer star was killed.

Meyiwa was shot dead at his girlfriend’s home in Vosloorus in October 2014.

While Sibiya’s confession and pointing out place him among the intruders at the Khumalo home, he accuses police of fabricating evidence to frame him.

eNCA's Jenna-Leigh Bilong speaks to eNCA Reporter, Manqoba Mchunu, legal expert Elton Hart, and Ulrich Roux, who is another legal expert. The discussion unpacks the latest stage in the trial, where Muzi Sibiya is taking the stand.

Manqoba's summary provides insights into the claim that Sibiya has made about his confession, alleging that police had coerced him into signing prewritten statements of confession and pointings-out.

However, as Manqoba points out, the state is trying to argue that there are, indeed, similarities between Sibiya's statement and those made by the accused before him.

Ulrich Roux unpacks the matter of Sibiya's alibi. Sibiya had claimed that he was nowhere near Gauteng, Vosloorus, at the time of the murder. However, Roux believes that the state has proven, through their line of questioning about Sibiya's transactions at the time, that Sibiya was, in fact, around Vosloorus around the time.

Finally, Elton Hart discusses a related matter, because the matter of Sibiya's alibi raises questions about his credibility. Hart says that Sibiya's credibility is the key in this matter. It is what will allow the state to make a balancing act between Sibiya's statements and other accounts, and then determine which version is the most probable.

Muzi Sibiya's alibi that he was home in KwaZulu-Natal between 2013 and 2015 has now come under renewed scrutiny, as the state presents evidence suggesting he was in Gauteng when Meyiwa was murdered.
