JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s cabinet has some new faces and some old.
We are in conversation with the Minister of Human Settlements who has been in the job since 2021 and returns – Mmamoloko Kubayi.
Her department is responsible for the delivery of housing and upgrading informal settlements.
The 2022 census showed there were nearly 18 million households in formal dwellings and 1.4 million in informal dwellings.

That means the percentage of infomal homes has dropped from 16 percent in 1996 to 8% in 2022.
But creating homes or providing serviced plots for 1.4 million households is still a mammoth task.
