Three candidates were shortlisted for the position, which has been vacant since Chief Justice Mandisa Maya was elevated to head the Constitutional Court.

MK Party's parliamentary leader and former Judge President of the Western Cape, John Hlophe says he has personally written a letter of objection to the JSC. He says he gave detailed reasons that he cannot discuss with the media at the moment.

The JSC says Mlambo was recommended out of the candidates after intense deliberations.

The commission will now advise President Cyril Ramaphosa following the outcome of these interviews.
