Multi-party government rule is here to stay - Roelf Meyer

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa is unlikely to return to a government that is led by a single party.

This is according to South Africa's ambassador to the United States, Roelf Meyer.

Meyer, who was speaking at the launch of his political memoirs on Monday, said multi-party government rule is here to stay.

The book details Meyer's political journey from the National Party to the transition to a democratic South Africa.

Meyer attributed the success of this transition to the ability of ‘keeping the middle ground together’.

This transition, he said, was made possible by former presidents Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk, among others.

“That success was part of the ultimate sobering effect that led us to make that transition in a peaceful way.”
