Murder rate down between April and June 2026

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s latest crime stats painted a mixed picture: Some serious crimes are down while others are on the rise.

Murder fell by 5.9% between April and June this year, but attempted murder surged by 8.7%.

Mpumalanga and North West are the only provinces to see murder rates rise.

This underscores the uneven nature of the country’s crime picture.

In the last quarter, violent crime dropped by over 4%, and murder fell by 9.5%.

Still, dozens are killed daily across the country.

Kidnappings, house robberies, and business robberies also declined during this period.
