National shutdown | BUSA says threats must not be tolerated

BUSA says any threats by the EFF to force businesses and services to close should be met with the full force of the law.

JOHANNESBURG - The EFF has organised a national shutdown for Monday and has called on all South Africans to join.

Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) says any threats by the party to force businesses and services to close should be met with the full force of the law.

It said the only ones who can decide if a business will stay open on Monday or not are the business owners themselves.

The group says the planned national stay-away will only worsen the country's economic standing.

"We have issued a statement recognising the right to protest but we condemn in the strongest terms the comments made and the assertions made by the Economic Freedom Fighters that they will force people to close," said BUSA's Cas Coovadia.

"That they have announced the stay-away and they have announced that businesses will close and airports will close and so on. It's not their right to do so.

"So I think the forces of law and order need to protect the rights of people who do not want to stay away on Monday and who still want to go to work."
