GQEBERHA - In the Eastern Cape, Nelson Mandela Bay Deputy Mayor, Gary Van Niekerk, has been fined R2,000 for not appearing in court.

He was meant to appear in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Gqeberha.
Van Niekerk is accused of illegally appointing a legal firm.
He signed the appointment of that firm in the Speaker's capacity, despite no longer being a municipal councillor.
It led to the law firm demanding payment of over R500,000.
