New bill proposes jail time for exposing whistleblowers

PRETORIA - A new bill is proposing up to 15 years in prison for anyone who reveals a whistleblower’s identity or retaliates against them.

In a move to dismantle the culture of silence around corruption, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, officially released the Protected Disclosure Bill for public comment.

The proposed legislation represents government’s most aggressive attempt yet to shield those who expose wrongdoing.
