New measures to prevent matric exam leaks

JOHANNESBURG - Tighter security measures are in place for the National Senior Certificate exams currently underway.

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube said this is to protect the integrity of the exams, after last year's English, Mathematics and Physical Science papers were leaked.

Gwarube was speaking during a visit to Tembisa West Secondary School in Ekurhuleni to assess exam readiness.

But while the minister is confident the exams are on track, some schools still face serious infrastructure challenges.

At some schools, crumbling infrastructure and poor learning conditions raise serious questions about whether every pupil has an equal shot at success.

The department acknowledges that infrastructure failures remain a major challenge, with a backlog running into billions of rands.

Despite these challenges, Gwarube said it’s all systems go for the Class of 2026.

The minister said tighter security measures, including security scanners, are in place to prevent a repeat of last year’s exam leaks.
