New wave of scams targeting users on WhatsApp, SMS and email

JOHANNESBURG - Anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee has warned of a new wave of sophisticated scams targeting unsuspecting victims on web communication channels like WhatsApp, SMS and email.

Victims are often tricked into handing over banking and personal details, leading to devasting financial loss.

Abramjee said criminals were becoming more desperate and sophisticated.

“We as ordinary consumers have to become more and more alert. If it looks too good to be true, it probably isn’t. When you get a WhatsApp message be very cautious,” he said.

The host of Crime Watch advised users to utilise tools like the Truecaller app to verify cell phone numbers from suspicious text messages.

“Never click on the links, that is how they hack into your phone and empty your bank account.”

He also warned of dubious investment opportunities targeting the elderly.

“Eight of ten times these are scams and they’re simply trying to extort money. More elderly people are now being targeted.”

For those using WhatsApp for every day communication, Abramjee cautioned against clicking on links from unknown numbers.

“Trust your instincts and report suspicious activities to the authorities. Don’t become a victim.
