JOHANNESBURG - DA Johannesburg mayoral candidate Helen Zille has declared war on corruption.
She has promised an independent investigation into alleged corruption, with public hearings and published findings, and calls for stronger protections for whistleblowers.
Speaking during her campaign for the city, Zille also called for stronger protections for whistleblowers.
"Joburg needs its own Madlanga moment We will initiate an independent investigation into the corruption that has crippled this city, with public hearings and published findings. We will act on the evidence from the Auditor General, from whistleblowers, the Zondo Commission, and others.
"We will rebuild this city's anti-corruption capacity, shield it from political interference, and do whatever is possible to protect whistleblowers.
And we will scrutinize city contracts, starting with the biggest and the most suspicious. We will open up procurement to public scrutiny. Who got the contract? Why? What were they paid? And what did they deliver? No more secret deals. No favours for connected friends. No work, no pay," she said.
