One arrested after chaos erupted during Durban protest action

DURBAN - One person has been arrested after chaos broke out in protest action outside the Home Affairs office on Che Guevara Road at Umbilo in Durban.

The suspect, confirmed to be a foreign national, is alleged to have assaulted a police officer with a stone during a confrontation between people who were marching and foreign nationals on Thursday

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the foreign nationals were camping outside the Home Affairs offices.

According to Netshiunda  approximately 100 marchers went on what they termed a "clean-up campaign" in which they allegedly picked up essential belongings to the foreign nationals, and a physical confrontation erupted.

“During the commotion, stones were thrown around and one which was thrown by a foreign national landed on a police officer,” he said.

Netshiunda said calm and order have since been restored with investigations now underway following the arrest of the suspect.

“Anyone found to have incited violence will face the might of the law. The arrested suspect will appear in court after all processes have been completed."
