Parents urged to beware of common household poisons

JOHANNESBURG - Dangerous poisons are lurking all over your house.

From bleach and detergents to air fresheners and polish, they have deadly potential.

Over 6,000 poisoning cases were recorded in the first half of 2025.

And, with children under five most vulnerable, parents are being urged to take precautions.

Cindy-Lee Golding, a specialist at the Tygerberg Poisons Information Centre, said children should be taught that these substances are not safe to ingest or touch.

"It is important to store all cleaning products high up or in locked cardboard boxes and keep them in original containers and close lids properly after use," she said.
