CAPE TOWN - The Department of Social Development has come under fire for spending R3 million on a trip to New York earlier this year.
Minister Sisisi Tolashe and her officials appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee.
They were summoned to explain expenses for attending UN Women's Conference in March.

Social Development Portfolio Committee chairperson Bridget Masango says while the committee supported the department’s participation in the global event, the delegation and the high costs raised serious concerns.
“It seems there was no proper planning and they had to hop on planes at the last minute. The hotels were highly priced, and so were the flights. The portfolio committee has taken a dim view of this issue,” Masango said.
