JOHANNESBURG - The festive season is upon us, and that means more people on the roads.
It’s a time to rest and enjoy, but it’s also known as one of the deadliest periods on South Africa’s roads.
While safety campaigns aim to curb fatalities, the annual statistics continue to paint a grim picture.
Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane said pedestrians remain a major concern.
“We are seeing a high number of pedestrian fatalities,” he said.
Zwane added that jaywalking on highways is a growing problem.
“We are patrolling those stretches of road associated with high incidents of jaywalking to remove those people from the roads.”
He said they are also working with communities to raise road safety awareness.
