Pensioner wins David and Goliath fight against City of Joburg

JOHANNESBURG - Concerns over inflated property rates persist for some Joburg residents.

Sylvia Lampe, a 71-year-old from Randburg, has successfully ended an eight-year battle with the City of Joburg regarding inflated property rates.

Lampe was charged over R9,000 in commercial tariffs, for operating a small gym from her home.

This fee was a dramatic increase from the R1,200 she had been paying, despite having received official permission to run her business since 1984.
