Police battling drug trafficking, cybercrime and car thefts

PRETORIA - Drug smuggling, theft of SUV cars as well as cybercrimes are some of the major crimes that have plagued the police force.

This has made it difficult for police to fight against transnational crimes, says National police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.

He was speaking at the transnational organised crime strategic planning session in Pretoria on Monday.

Masemola says criminals have become adaptive, using sophisticated methods such as crypto currency, laundering, deep fake technology and encrypted communication to exploit jurisdictional gaps, weak regulatory frameworks and corruption, making international cooperation not just an option but a necessity.

He said the scale and impact of these crimes are staggering, yet despite the growing complexity of these threats, their responses must remain unwavering.

“We cannot afford complacency, we must act decisively, collaboratively and innovatively,” he said.
