"Police are coming on board to also check if everyone has been retrieved from the scene, if there are people who have been swept away," she said.

"But currently the exercise of just accounting for everyone and informing next-of-kin is underway."

Twenty people were killed in the accident between the bus and a cash-in-transit truck.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but heavy rains have been drenching the region in recent days, said a spokesman for the department, Tidimalo Chuene.
