Police fire stun grenades as Kugompo march turns violent

KUGOMPO CITY- Protest action in KuGompo City turned violent on Wednesday as police fired stun grenades during a march.

Angry KuGompo residents descended to the streets demanding that undocumented migrants leave the country.

The march comes after the controversial coronation of a Nigerian national as an Igbo king.

One of the protesters said the march was intended to be peaceful, but tensions escalated when the group approached an area known as California, which they allege is linked to criminal activity.

Amid the chaos, police took in a man who is accused of allegedly attacking a police officer.

But the man maintained his innocence while being taken into a police nyala.

Some protesters critised the apprehension, claiming he had done nothing wrong and was merely reacting after allegedly being pushed by one of the officers.

This is not the first-time residents in KuGompo took to the streets.

Twelve vehicles were damaged, and buildings were torched.

Nigerian embassy officials have since apologised following controversy over the alleged coronation of an Igbo king.

Deputy to the Acting High Commissioner, Olajide Ogunmadeji, distanced the Nigerian government from the coronation incident.

He also maintained that what happened at KuGompo City was not a coronation.
